FEATURED WORD:

“breadcrumbs”

Our featured word for the day is not necessarily related to gaming but it is interesting all the same. So who knows what a ‘breadcrumb’ or ‘breadcrumb trail’ (and no I am not talking about ‘miette de pain’) is in the world of information technology?

Well interestingly enough Guillaume Tassetto asked me this question the other day so I thought I would share the answer with you all cause I think it is a great concept or metaphor. So when you eat a loaf of bread, or rather more likely a sandwich (not sure about you but I don’t usually go around eating a whole loaf of bread) you often leave a little trace of what you have been eating in the form of breadcrumbs…well similarly when you are surfing the internet there is a little trace of where you have been and these are called ‘breadcrumbs’. Breadcrumbs typically appear horizontally across the top of a webpage, usually below any title bars or headers. They provide links back to each previous page that the user navigated through in order to get to the current page, for hierarchical structures usually the parent pages of the current one. Breadcrumbs provide a trail for the user to follow back to the starting/entry point of a website.

This metaphor references the story of Hansel and Gretel who left a trail of breadcrumbs so that they could find the way home – ironically though in the story the path was eaten by birds and they got lost so therefore perhaps the metaphor is not perfect!
